What is the Motor Cortex?

The Motor Cortex is part of the cerebral cortex and critical to initiating motor movements. Areas of the motor cortex correspond to specific body parts, like the thumb. The motor cortex and thumb twitch is used as a gauge to determine the appropriate strength of TMS pulses. This is an important safety practice which greatly reduces the risk of seizures.

What is the prefrontal cortex?

The prefrontal cortex is thought to play an important role in ‘higher’ or executive brain functions including judgment, planning and reasoning.  It is also involved in mood or emotion regulation.
